The Mission: Enterprise-Grade AI Governance

Arthur is the industry-leading AI platform that simplifies deployment, monitoring, and management of traditional and generative AI models, ensuring scalability, security, compliance, and efficient enterprise use. In 2022, Arthur raised a $42 million Series B and has since positioned itself as the go-to solution for Fortune 100 companies seeking enterprise-grade AI governance.

The Challenge: Enterprise Requirements Meet Dashboard Limitations

Arthur needed a private-label visualization solution that would seamlessly integrate with their platform and flexibly accommodate end-user customization. Their in-house custom components did not have the bandwidth to cater to diverse enterprise requirements.

“Each enterprise customer is unique. Accommodating one customer's feature requests completely gets in the way of accommodating another one,” explains Zach Fry, VP of Engineering.

Serving these enterprise clients also requires solutions that operate securely in on-premise or customer managed air-gapped environments (e.g. air-gapped VPC) and respected Arthur’s authorization scheme.

After exploring Grafana, Arthur identified critical limitations:

  1. Limited Access Control and Authorization/Security Issues: Grafana lacked the ability for Arthur to easily map data source-based and role-based access controls onto Grafana dashboards in a way that would secure the information that users are seeing in the product. This was a critical shortcoming for Arthur's enterprise deployments with strict security requirements.

  2. Private-Labeling Problems: Arthur couldn't seamlessly integrate Grafana into their product experience with consistent branding and visual design, compromising the professional appearance needed for their enterprise solution.

The authorization and security issues, as well as the frontend user interface limitations, were particularly critical for Arthur's enterprise customers, making Grafana unsuitable despite its initial convenience for rapid prototyping.

The Upsolve Solution

Zach approached the search with "complete incredulity."

"I cannot believe there is not something out there that does this," Zach recalls. "I want something in the middle, which is a product that comes with all of the extensible dashboarding points that allows for dragging and dropping charts without having the trappings of RBAC and user management."

"Upsolve was really the only product that provided that solution," says Zach. The integration went smoothly and Upsolve provided exactly what Arthur needed:

  • Support for on-prem deployment

  • Integration with Arthur’s authorization models

  • Out-of-the-box security: Give end users the ability to edit their dashboard views while engineering maintained the ability to set and change access policies easily, at a granular level

  • Enterprise-grade customization capabilities for a pixel-perfect UI that looks and feels native to Arthur’s platform

The Results

"Upsolve turned out to be a pretty fantastic investment," says Zach. When asked if it was worth it: "Resounding, yes. Absolutely. We certainly wouldn't have been able to move as quickly. And it looks really good."
