Back to Glossary
Hybrid BI refers to a business intelligence approach that combines multiple deployment models, data sources, or processing methods within a single analytics ecosystem. Most commonly, it describes a mix of cloud-based BI and on-premise or private data systems.
In a hybrid BI setup:
Some data lives in cloud data warehouses
Some data remains on-premise or in private networks
BI tools access both securely through gateways or connectors
Hybrid BI is common in organizations that:
Are migrating to the cloud gradually
Have strict security or compliance requirements
Use legacy systems alongside modern platforms
From a processing perspective, hybrid BI may also combine:
Batch analytics for reporting
Real-time analytics for monitoring
Centralized dashboards with embedded analytics
Technically, hybrid BI relies on components like BI gateways, federated queries, secure networking, and role-based access control. These ensure data can be analyzed without compromising security.
The main advantage of hybrid BI is flexibility. Organizations can modernize analytics without disrupting critical systems. The main challenge is complexity — managing performance, governance, and consistency across environments requires careful design.
Hybrid BI reflects real-world constraints. Few organizations operate entirely in the cloud or entirely on-premise. Hybrid BI enables analytics to adapt to business reality while still delivering modern BI capabilities.
