Back to Glossary
BI gateways are secure connectors that enable BI tools to access data stored in private or on-premise systems without exposing those systems directly to the internet. They act as a bridge between internal data sources and cloud-based BI platforms.
BI gateways are commonly used when:
Data resides on on-premise databases
Data is behind corporate firewalls
Security policies restrict direct cloud access
From a technical standpoint, a BI gateway establishes an outbound, encrypted connection from the internal network to the BI service. This allows data to be queried or refreshed securely without opening inbound ports.
BI gateways support:
Scheduled data refreshes
Live query connections
Authentication and access control
Network isolation
They are widely used in tools like Power BI, Tableau, and Looker for hybrid analytics setups.
From a business perspective, BI gateways enable organizations to adopt cloud BI tools while maintaining strict security and compliance requirements.
However, gateways must be monitored and maintained. Performance bottlenecks, downtime, or misconfiguration can disrupt dashboards and reporting.
BI gateways are a key component in hybrid analytics architectures, enabling secure access to distributed data environments.
