There are three main types:

• Contextual anomalies: Normal behavior in one context but abnormal in another (e.g., high traffic at night).

Techniques used:

• ML-based models (isolation forests, clustering, autoencoders)

• Deep learning-based sequence models (LSTM, transformers)

• Modern BI platforms integrate anomaly detection to proactively monitor KPIs. For example:

• Detecting a sudden spike in refund rate

• Alerting when inventory levels fall below normal

• Identifying a drop in payment success rates

• Spotting bot activity or fraudulent transactions

The biggest challenge is reducing noise. Poorly configured anomaly systems send too many alerts, causing alert fatigue. Good systems incorporate seasonality, baseline patterns, holidays, time-of-day behavior, and multi-variable relationships.

Anomaly detection turns BI into a monitoring system for business health. Instead of relying on dashboards alone, teams get real-time alerts that drive immediate action.
